Book Presentation 27 February 2020
Museum of the Macedonian Struggle
On Thursday, February 27 at 7pm at the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle (Alexandros Haitoglou Hall), the study of the postdoctoral scholar of AUTH Dr. Konstantinos S. Papanikolaou will be presented, entitled:
“Austro-Hungary, the German Empire and the Macedonian Struggle (1903-1908). Convergences and discrepancies within the Dual Alliance”.
The lecture will present the conclusions of the research of the postdoctoral scholar of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos S. Papanikolaou, on the policy of Austro-Hungary and the German Empire regarding the Macedonian Issue in the period 1903-1908. The doctrine of the integrity of the Ottoman Empire’s possessions, the attitude of German-Austrian diplomacy to the conflicts between Greeks and Bulgarians in the three provinces, the possibility of creating an anti-Slavic Balkan alliance and the role of the German-speaking press are the main points of the lecture.
The reform programme of Mürzsteg, the plans of the Habsburgs for their advance southwards and the importance of Greece in the plans of Vienna and Berlin are only some of the individual points that concern the researcher, while emphasis is placed on the largely unknown differences that emerged, on the occasion of the conflict in Macedonia, in the ranks of the Dual Alliance. The conclusions of the study, which is based on original archival research, will be published in an international scientific journal.
The scholarship is within the framework of the Protocol of Cooperation between the two institutions. The Rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Mr. Nikolaos Papaioannou, will address the audience while the commentator will be Mr. Dimitris Lyvanios, Assistant Professor of the Department of Journalism ( AUTH).
